What Engine 335 Taught Jonathan Curtis About Leading

In his last year as a wildland firefighter, Jonathan Curtis led physical training and hikes for his crew on Engine 335, working under the engine captain.

He didn't hold the top title. His job was to get the crew ready for hard work: long hikes, heavy loads and long days.

That is where he learned what leadership means to him. It isn't about rank. It's about getting the people around you prepared, and then trusting them to do the job.

He used the same idea later when he led a sales team of 15, most of whom had never sold before. He taught the whole process from the start. Then he gave people room to work.

Now he is running for Deschutes County Clerk. The Clerk's Office has skilled staff who already know their work. Curtis says a good Clerk listens to them, supports them and keeps residents informed.

Preparation and trust. That is the kind of leader he wants to be for this county.
